The Kai Ora Fund is a small community grants process to support innovative projects that address food security, benefit the wider community and encourage employment and economic development in the region.  We want our communities to have an accessible, affordable and safe food supply for current and future generations, and to be resilient to future disruption or unavailability of food due to various risk factors including droughts, fuel shortages and economic instability.

Vision: He whenua taurikura, he whānau houkura

In Tai Tokerau we care for the land; growing, harvesting and sustaining our communities so that whenua and whānau are healthy and well.

Abundant whenua, prosperous whānau.

Purpose: Enabling Northlanders to eat nutritious and sustainably grown local food.

Projects funded through the Kai Ora Fund should encourage:

  • Increased availability, promotion, or utilisation of local healthy food to increase health and wellbeing (oranga).
  • Increased self-sufficiency and community resilience (rangatiratanga).
  • The sharing of food and gardening knowledge, including customary techniques (kaitiakitanga and mātauranga).
  • Community cooperation and connection and benefits for the wider community (whanaungatanga).
  • Increased regional economic development and local employment opportunities.
  • Environmental sustainability and stewardship (kaitiakitanga).

The Kai Ora fund will prioritise projects that:

Whanaketanga – Engage multiple partners and strengthen cooperation and regional development.

Promote Equity – Prioritise lower socio-economic communities (and in particular children), or people with food security and accessibility issues.

Whakapapa – Strenghthen whānau, hapu, iwi and Māori communities.

Sustainable – We will prioritise projects that show they can sustain their work and impact beyond the initial grant.

2021 Kai Ora Fund Application Information

Purpose:  Enabling Northlanders to eat nutritious and sustainably grown local food.

Applications close on Wednesday 24 March 2021

The Kai Ora Fund experiences high demand.  In previous years we have not been able to support all applications submitted.  There is no guarantee of funding. Applications are prioritised based on our fund criteria.

To be considered for funding:

  1. The applicant must complete an application on our application portal (or get in touch with Daniela or Carole if this is an issue).
  2. The applicant must have New Zealand based legal staus (for example, be an incorporated society, charitable trust, a not-for-profit company, and so on).  GST registration is not a requirement.
  3. If your organisation is not a legal entity you may partner with an organisation that is.  These organisations are referred to as ‘umbrella’ or auspicing organisations.  If you use this approach you will need to work closely with the umbrella organisation and their details must be provided in the application.  The umbrella organisation will be the organisation contracted with and it will have the responsibility for managing the funding and ensuring the delivery of the project.  Information about the auspicing relationship and aggreement needs to be included in (or attached to) the application.
  4. We will prioritise projects that closely fit with the Kai Ora criteria, purpose and values.
  5. The maximum funding available per project will be $5,000.  Lesser amounts may be applied for.
  6. All sucessful projects must send a representative to the Kai Ora workshop in their region and be part of the Kai Ora network.  At the Kai Ora ‘workshop day’ contracting details will be confirmed and links, relationships and synergies between projects can be strengthened and fund representatives will be available to discuss any concerns and arrange ongoing support.  Workshops dates are as follows:

Whangarei Tuesday 25 May 2021 between 10 am and 3 pm

Kaitaia Tuesday 19 May 2021 10 am until 3 pm.

Kaikohe Wednesday 20 May 2021 10am until 3pm

How we manage agreements and monitor delivery and outcomes.

You will be given a key contact for delivery and management of the project.  The agreements are structured so you receive funding in advance of the activity.  A final report is required on completion that includes details of how the funds were spent, outcomes achieved, and examples of the difference the project has made to individuals, whānau, hapū and community. We may also require you to participate in wider evaluation of the Kai Ora project in the future.

Publishing information about funded projects

The Kai Ora Fund will share information on funded projects on our website, through the Kai Ora network of projects and in public communications.  This may include the name of your project, your organisation, key contact people, a short summary of your project and the outcomes of your project.
